FRP is the abbreviation of “Fiber Reinforced Plastics”, and that means composites. The ancient composite that’s familiar in Japan is Clay Wall. Fibers of straws and bamboos are compounded with clay to build walls of houses and castles and so on.
And now, fibers of glass and carbon are compounded with thermosetting resin to make light materials that has weather resistance, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance and shock resistance. That is used for all sorts of fields, such as vehicle relation, aviation relation, ship relation, architectural materials, savings and storage tanks, moldings and chairs in theme parks etc. That’s also used for art field after Japanese famous artist Mr.Taro Okamoto had built molding with FRP.
Moreover FRP is focused as an indispensable material in space, ocean fields and development of new energy. |

The major features are, “stronger than iron, lighter than aluminium and never rusting”. FRP is only half weight of iron.
Other general features are, “easiness to mold various shapes” and “chemical resistance”.
And utilizing the special property of composite, it’s possible to design and manufacture in accordance with the purpose. For example, featuring insulation or conductivity, interception or permeability of electric wave, thermal interception or conductivity.

By roughly dividing, the materials that compose FRP can be divided into plastic (resin) and the fiber reinforcements.
